A head-unit-only upgrade with 2-way component speakers up front and full-range speakers in the rear doors is the simplest way to improve car audio without adding an amp. The head unit drives all four speaker positions directly; a passive crossover per side splits the front signal between a tweeter (in the A-pillar) and a mid (in the front door).
